So I was all, "[info]aunty_marion, I would like a hat!"

And [info]aunty_marion was like, "Dude, I can make you a hat!"

So I was like, "Can you make me...a Dalek-head hat?"

And she was all, "TCH, YEAH!"

And thus I acquired a hat.

Teddy bear not included. He's mine and his name is Picnic.

Prices vary by yarn type and shipping and such, but mine was $20 and it is undoubtedly the finest fannish $20 I have spent since I bought Travelin' Jack Harkness. It is going to INSULATE. INSULATE. INSULATE. my head all winter long!

It has bobbles for speaker lights!

I met you at the station in Ronkonkoma
So, we had a committee meeting today, and I swear to god, I thought someone was going to start throwing things. Writing the minutes up should be an interesting exercise in doublespeak. Board meeting tomorrow, and then I am done, DONE I TELL YOU, until January. I mean, I still have to work etc., but the craziness should abate. I hope. I am tired. And it makes it really hard for me to write. Witness the tiny writing round-up!

BSG folk, you totally need to watch this vid about the frakked up relationship between Bill Adama and Starbuck: Like My Very Own Blood by [info - livejournal.com] jarrow. It's FANTASTIC. Creepy and utterly heartbreaking and just... takes the idea that Adama made Starbuck into his second son, his replacement for Zak, to its logical conclusion, including the damage it inflicts on her, him, and Lee. And of course Kara accepts it, clings to it - how does she know any better? *cuddles her* Really well done, and you know how bad I am at getting vids, but this one made total sense to me.

    MY FLAT SMELLS AMAZING.

After I got of my poor bruised ass, I gathered up a ton of leftovers from Thanksgiving and made some brand of turkey curry in my dutch oven. I love my dutch oven, which after frying two batches of stuffing and a game hen is pretty much non-stick these days.

Curry veterans reading this will no doubt lol, but I have never made curry before and I feel like a CULINARY GOD.

    Turkey Curry )

I still have about 4lbs of turkey left. Tomorrow night, after I have bought an onion: TURKEY CHOWDER.

I have this weird thing, ok, I don't like to be away from home after dark.

It's not that I'm afraid of the dark or I think the Creepy People only come out at night, because Creepy People often accost me in the middle of the goddamn afternoon. I think, though I can't be certain, that it comes from never having strayed very far from home as a kid. Even as a teenager I never had a curfew because I never needed one -- the times I was out after dinnertime were so rare that we negotiated them on a case-by-case basis. I had to be home; Mum was in classes most nights, and there was Bernard to look after, dinner to make, homework to do.

I get this terrible sense that if I'm away from home or out of touch for too long, something terrible will happen. Granted, I have my cellphone, which is rarely more than ten feet from my body, but what if something at home catches on fire, or my flat is robbed, or some Awful Thing happens?

I've been trying to push off from this a bit, because there's no reason I shouldn't be out at night; I live alone, I make sure my home is safe, and I have my phone. But I still get this scary sense of urgency, even tonight when all I was doing was going a couple of blocks out of my way to pick up some food for dinner. I had to force myself to slow down, for one, and also to go past my normal turning and onwards to the shop, rather than chickening out and bolting for the El.

It might not be terribly helpful that while I was cost-comparing some mushrooms in the grocery store someone rammed me with a shopping cart and, because I have no sense of balance, I went over sideways in front of the tomatoes.

Some days a monastery looks awfully appealing.

fabulous things, also Idol RPF: Stardust (Adam/Kris) and Drive-By Devotion (Adam/Tommy)
First a list of fabulous things:

    * whooo, incredibly annoying yet critical pile of code working and committed, soon to deploy to the AO3. This Yuletide move might actually work, you guys. *g*

    * [info]queenbitchfest master list of stories \o/ SO SO MANY of which were amazing but especially [info]winterlive's Future Legend -- 52K words of gloriously good post-apocalyptic Kradam inspired BRILLIANTLY by Diamond Dogs, omg, so amazing.

    * [info]teamlambliff and [info]atom_fic, because YAY for Adam/Tommy, who clearly are out to provide ALL THE FANSERVICE IN THE WORLD. No, seriously, they publicly tweeted Velvet Goldmine-inspired pet names at each other. (Tommy == "glitterbaby" lol)

My own [info]queenbitchfest story was apparently kind of obvious going by the guessing, haha, but here it is on my website:

    Stardust (2500 words)
    Adam/Kris, adult, explicit
Adam pushed himself up and loomed up over Kris, his eyes heavy-lidded in glitter and shadow, predatory and smiling. Inspired by "Ziggy Stardust".

Also, cough, I might have committed some Adam/Tommy porn last night in the [info]aianonlovefest? And when I say porn, I mean this stuff is not so much NC-17 as it is X-rated. Brought to you by the Extreme Dudeness of Tommy's myspace comments.

I haven't put this up on my website yet because it might be expanding to an EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS EXTENT but you can read it over at the fest (where you should fill some prompts btw!):

    Drive-By Devotion
Adam/Tommy, adult, explicit <-- REALLY REALLY I MEAN IT

It seemed like a good idea after five martinis in the Wynn high-rollers bar.

    (Read the story)

    Kinky Kristmas Begins Tomorrow!
Posting for this year's Kinky Kristmas celebration begins tomorrow at noon U.S. Eastern time! We've received a ton of fantastic fic and art from both Daily Deviant members and watchers, and we're itching to show it off.

Behind the cut you'll find advertising banners for Kinky Kristmas. Feel free to use them and remind your f-lists to watch us throughout December. We've seen the pieces we'll be posting over the next month, and we can assure you that Daily Deviant is the place to be this holiday season!

Lots more behind the cut! )

All of that having been said, we'd like to add: No matter what fests you watch and participate in this year, be sure to take a few moments to express your enjoyment of the works you view and read. Without the wonderful authors and artists, there would be no fandom as we know it. ♥

EXTRA LONG: Light as Iron, Singed as Pearl (H/D, NC-17)
Title: Light as Iron, Singed as Pearl
    Author: [info]snegurochka_lee
    Pairing: Harry/Draco
    Rating: NC-17
    Word Count: ~13,800
    Warnings: Dom/sub. Bondage. EWE.
Summary: The owner of the elite BDSM club M. had not gained his reputation as the most coveted Dominant on the scene by taking on just any riff-raff submissive who asked. It would take an unexpected letter to convince him to accept a new client, but it might turn out to be the biggest mistake he ever made.

    To do list till April
I have just been working out my To Do list till the end of March. For work, that is, though it includes such stuff as two weeks annual leave over Christmas.

One of my colleagues, USHomosamurai (who went back to the US a couple of years ago) asked me once why the British financial year runs from 1st April to 31st March. I didn't know, but was able to tell her that in Samuel Pepys time, the year's number changed on 1st April - his diary makes that clear. So the habit of changing the year's number on the 1st of January is something less than four hundred years old, but - I was able to work this out from first principles - can't be very much less, because the US cloned its calendar from the UK in the 18th century, and the US (say American friends) has financial and calendar year running concurrently.

But why (asked USHomosamurai) would the new year ever have started on 1st April? I thought about it, and shrugged: "Could be because the Roman Empire's New Year began 1st April, and you know how bureaucrats are...."

I don't care for today's XKCD. It's cruel to physics lecturers.

I did, however, love last night's House episode, even if it was rather cruel to House. Cruelty to House is what makes fanfic fun. light spoilers for what's either 6.8 or 6.9 depending how you're counting )

I have finished writing the skeleton of my Yuletide story.

    Adopt one today!

    Dear Sam,

I am trying to get you laid. It would be easier if you weren't such an angsty motherfucker. Stop being so difficult! It's sex! It's supposed to be fun! No wonder most of the porn I write is about Dean. He rarely gives me this kind of trouble. Why can't you be more like your brother?

PS: Yes, I understand everyone you sleep with dies. I...am not breaking that streak. Um, sorry? I blame canon. Still, though. Sex! You should be less angsty about it!

Holy shit, Jane Lynch is doing commercials for X-Box in which she is in character as Sue Sylvester. And they sing "Carry On Wayward Son." And the mother is a fan of Greco-Roman wrestling (i.e., oiled half-naked men getting sweaty together).

I feel like this is some kind of crazy fannish collision. I am amused.

    Random stuff I'm thinking about
    1. Is it just me, or did Legend of the Seeker kick it up a notch in the past two episodes and start decreasing the pretty:interesting ratio? (While arguably getting prettier, even!)

    2. Consider, if you will, that the all-male lawyers at this Texas firm saw nothing wrong with the images appearing on their website. (Possibly triggery for sexual abuse/child abuse.)  I actually believe very strongly that we need defense lawyers who specialize in crimes for which even defending an accused is excoriated—but this isn’t the way to do it.

    3. Now for something completely different. I am a technological incompetent with a CMS on my website and a planned move to a new webhost. Anybody have recommendations for cheap assistance doing the move? And by assistance, I mean: somebody to whom I could trust with my site password and have the thing moved? Because the semester is so crazy, we’re probably looking at a move in early 2010.

    REMEMBERED ONE!

So, R went to his 10 year high school reunion on Friday night. He kind of had to, since as the class president he organised it. I missed mine, which is just as well since I've no real desire to return to high school. He said it was fine, a little weird, and that someone had assembled a photo montage...

R: There were a lot of pictures of me.
Sam: Were you the prom king? You were totally the prom king.
    R: Yeah, I was.
Sam: Class president, star football player, prom king...god, you were the guy I hated in high school.
R: And don't think I wasn't very conscious of that. I thought about wearing a hat.
Sam: To protect yourself from thrown things?
R: To hide how bald I am.

Poor lad. He's very sensitive about how much more forehead he has now.

Also, I am watching the new Doctor Who animated cartoon, "Dreamland", and I have to say I'm enjoying it way more than I have the last few live action episodes in the franchise. I'd feel guilty about this, but frankly it's nice not to be clenching in anticipation of someone's horrible death.

    Fic Search
I'm looking for a fic that I read a while ago, it was very long and epic and dark, and involved an intricate plot to take over the Death Eaters. Draco was a slave, and so was Harry, and Lucius changed the Dark Mark into a tattoo entwined with thorny roses, taking over. It was so long and so lovely, and I think it might have been lost with the death of GJ, but I'm requesting in hope that I just forgot to favourite it.

Can anyone help me out? I think it might have been written for a fest.

If this sort of thing isn't allowed, feel free to delete.

I went over to R's yesterday afternoon, to hang out and watch the Notre Dame-Stanford game and eat lots of takeaway. We had a good time, but if there were any especially quotable moments I've forgotten them. We also watched a film called Kandahar, about an Afghani journalist returning to Afghanistan after years of absence to try and find her sister, who sent her a letter saying she would kill herself during the next solar eclipse. The journalist has three days to get from the Iranian border to Kandahar to save her sister, traveling incognito under a burka.

R fell asleep about halfway through and I finally gave up when the significant pauses between characters and the incredibly repetitive dialogue got to be too much for me. He texted me this morning to ask if I survived it and I told him no. Apparently you never get to see if the journalist makes it to Kandahar to save her sister. On the one hand I get it: the journey, the experience of Afghanistan under the Taliban, is the important message. On the other hand, seriously, that was a really boring film with no apparent climax or denoument. I'm positive there are better ways to document the cultural wealth and material poverty of Afghanistan.

ANYWAY. This post is just to say that I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth.

I will admit that the peanut-butter-and-apple pie tastes better the day after it was cooked; apparently it really needs to be served cold.

I have to go back to work tomorrow. I like my job and all, but I really like staying in and watching movies while eating mediocre pie, too.
